Picard or Kirk? Ripley or McClane? Dedalus or Drizzt?

I kinda work for the oil industry and have seen it twice! and this guy wasn't a fan - this site is always a good read http://www.bigempire.com/filthy/avatar.html"There isn't a beat of the movie that isn't predictable. From the first time Worthington and Saldana meet, you know they are going to hump. Only, you don't know that scene is going to be so damn cheesy and awkward. The first time you see the bigger-than-the-rest dragon and hear that only the bravest warriors can ride it, you know Worthington will. The first time you feel how slimy the bad guys are, you know how they will act and that they will lose. You also know the movie will invent some lame way to get Worthington physically into the body of his avatar so he can live with the Na'vi. Yeah, it looks great. It looks like a really nice place to go on vacation. I didn't want that, though. I wanted a good story." Hes really plot driven, I dont mind being led by the nose so much.
"Saber rattling about seceding from the Union for this reason or that (we are looking at you, Texas) has heretofore been a cheap political maneuver often motivated by the desire to shine the dim witted light of the mainstream media on some states' rights issue long since stripped away by the Supreme Court."

Theres only a finite amount of 'stories' and this particular a story may fit a certain framework. That's fine.
The movie was absolutely amazing. One of the most GORGEOUS pieces of cinema i have ever seen. Saw it in 3d and it was truly awe inspiring.

Jezz, I will admit that I haven't seen the movie yet (I do plan to!!). However, I have to preemptively agree a little with the criticism I've seen around the internet, all of which says "OMG it was gorgeous... but umm,, Mr. Cameron, wherefore* the hackneyed plot?" I'm fully prepared to be amazed by the beauty of the film, but the last time I saw a HERO named WORTHINGTON was about the same time I saw a pair of VILLAINS named LORDS BLACKWOOD and COWARD. One movie is supposed to be so advanced that my brain can't comprehend its full amazingosity, and the other was Sherlock Holmes. Which was based in writings that are over 100 years old, and set in a time when melodrama was the Fare du Jour and viewers were expected to actually clap, hiss, and cheer when certain archetypes walked out on stage.
Seriously? Worthington? That's almost worse than naming your bumbling, awkward-yet-strangely-appealing heroine "Bella Swan" and then expecting people to be amazed when she molts into the mostbeautifulvampiresnowflakeevarOMG.
*Hatchet, that one's for you.

...curse you and your teaching me to do this new-fangled thing called "checking shit" before I rant! I am properly humbled and as penance will let my previous post stand. /facepalm On the other hand, "Sully" as a last name for a paraplegic hero is an interesting choice, especially given the environmental aspects I've been reading about. FINE, I'll go see the movie tomorrow so I can revel in the gorgeousness of it all and come back to actually discuss.

We ended up seeing it at the IMAX and it was pretty awesome. It was predictible, and at times cliche, but the background story was very cool and graphically amazing. They did a great job creating the biology of the planet. I thought it was humerous that the rare mineral was called 'unobtainium'.

Star Wars wasn't original either... at least not to anyone familiar with Akira Kurosawa. But who cares! Both movies are still great and worth watching in the theaters.
